What’s the difference between a
representative body and a regulatory body? – and why should we care? There are already
many representative bodies for complementary & alternative therapies, but they are very fragmented. Dozens
of organisations may represent the same therapy. If a practitioner is removed from one representative group register,
there is little to stop them from joining another. In any case, the end purpose of representative groups is to support the profession
rather than being there with a view to protect the public. IAPPT works well with representative organisations
because we acknowledge they are on the cutting edge of their profession and the way it evolves also important for CPD. That’s
why we need to have regulatory bodies in place whose primary function is to safeguard the interests of patients / clients and
deal with complaints. A regulatory body grants entry to its register once a practitioner can prove they are
safe and fit to practise. IAAPT standards include completing a recognised course, participating in continual
professional development (CPD), having current insurance and signing up to a code of conduct, ethics and disciplinary
procedures. Should a member of a representative body be asked to leave for conduct reasons they can request that IAAPT makes
a note of this fact on our central register which is available to the public to view. The public would be able to check out their therapist with the regulatory body before starting
treatment. IAAPT is the only regulatory organisation that receives regular feed - back from clients and members of the public!
